The Tretryakov gallery has the largest collection of Russian art. There are more than 150 000 works of art there - paintings, sculptures and graphics.
It's located in the centre of Moscow, in Zamoskvorechye and fairly near the Kremlin.
There are two buildings. The historic building on Lavrushinsky street exhibits works of art of the 11-early 20 centuries. You can see the works of art of the 20 century in the building on Krymsky Val.
The gallery was founded by a famous Russian merchant Pavel Tretyakov. In the 1850 he started collecting paintings of Russian artists. He was going to give them to the city later.
Among the first paintings were the works of Perov, Savrasov, Maksimov, Klodt.
In the 1874 Tretyakov built a special building to house his collection. In 1881 it was opened for visitors. In 1892 the gallery was named after him.
There are always some new exhibitions in the gallery.
Now it's one of the most favorite places of Musсovites, and guests of our capital.
